BACK 2 SCHOOL BLAST 2012
To demonstrate the power of collaboration, eleven local organizations or businesses are partnering together for the 2012 Back 2 School Blast being held at the Roanoke Civic Center on Sunday, August 12 from 2pm – 6pm. Over 1,715 children of low income families had their back to school supply needs met last year, with an anticipated ,2,500 children expected for 2012.
“By collaborating with other organizations, we are able to have a bigger and better event,” says Leslie Littlefield, Volunteer Coordinator for the Rescue Mission. “Rather than multiple smaller school supply giveaways, one large event allows the organizing sponsors to pool their talents which means more efficiency and more effective service for struggling families with school age children in our community. Collaboration also allows more outside organizations, such as Lead Safe, Boys & Girls Club, FAMIS, Council of Community Services, and others to participate and reach these families with important information.”
Collection for school supplies and book bags for this event will start on June 1, 2012. The deadline for donations is Monday, August 6 (this gives us just short of a week to assemble the school kits!). Donations of supplies can be dropped off at the Rescue Mission located at 402 Fourth Street, SE, Roanoke, VA 24013 or any location where you see the Back to School Blast logo.
Additional activities for kids will take place on Sunday, August 12. A limited number of Back to School haircuts and foot washing with free shoes will be available.
There is no charge for any of the available supplies or services, however, children must be present and accompanied by a parent or guardian to receive school supplies. All supplies are on a first-come basis and as supplies last.
How and when to register for a ticket for the event will be posted at a later date. Each ticket will have a time slot denoted what time you may enter the building to participate. Parking for attendees will be free. The entrance to the event will be at the Roanoke Civic Center Coliseum entrance at Gate G8.
